A Dark and Dreary Halloween for Men and Monsters Alike
by Persee Tevebaugh
In this chapter, one of the three viewpoint characters, Scott, walks through the town he’s called home all his life, and upon arriving at work, begins to realize something sinister is at work in the woods that surround them…
In this chapter the second of our three viewpoint characters, Fox, describes their centuries long existence as the supernatural ruler of the forest, and how their whole routine was interrupted by the sudden appearance of a teenage ghost.
In this chapter we meet the final of the three viewpoint characters, Fungus. Fungus is a monster disguised as a human to live safely in town, but when they sense death in the air, they must choose whether they will help the humans or keep watching from afar.
Aliens, and Monsters, and Enbies, Oh My: Reimagining Gendered Humanity in Speculative Fiction
An Undergraduate Honors Thesis by Persee Tevebaugh
In this first section I have included an abstract summarizing the intention of my thesis project, an introduction to the topics I discuss, and the definitions of various relevant phrases on the topics of nonbinary gender, speculative fiction, and tabletop role-playing game Actual Plays. In essence, this thesis is an exploration of different types of nonbinary representation in speculative fiction, and speculation of the future of representation and media.
In this section I analyze the novel Dawn by Octavia Butler, and walk through the reasons why the depiction of the aliens in the novel plays into the trope of nonhuman characters being portrayed as nonbinary. Butler uses the concept of nonbinary genders to separate the familiar from the literal alien, and while I do not believe her motives to have been malicious, I outline the ways this trope has continued on after her.
In this section I analyze the actual-play show Dimension 20, specifically the season A Court of Fey and Flowers. Unlike the previous text, I argue that the representation in this show is affirming and equates nonbinary-ness with human-ness. I speculate that this could be due to the more accessible nature of internet-based content, and discuss Critical Role as another example of the same phenomenon.
Original Audio Drama Scripts
by Persee Tevebaugh
In this script, 20 year old Uber driver Briar tries to make some cash by transporting annoying ghost hunters to their next haunted location. Briar’s best friend Quartz is along for the ride as well… or are they?
In this script the roguish shapeshifter Zalabak has been tasked with breaking into a castle for their rich patron, but the thief quickly runs into difficulty completing their quest when they get caught up in fantastical murder plots and love triangles.
In this script a naive fairy, Feverfew, and their trusty mouse mount, Oxeye, quickly learn that adventuring out into the human world is not as easy as it seems, especially when you’re jumping from semi truck to semi truck and getting chased by mobster trolls.
An audio drama on which Persee is a writer
This is the first of two teaser trailers I wrote for the show, in which the Old Guard are on the hunt for a dangerous anomaly.
This is the second of two teaser trailers I wrote for the show, in which the New Guard hunt for information on a dangerous anomaly.
