A Day Without Labor
Greetings future mages of great repute! Apologies for the uncharacteristically chipper attitude but as you well know, I have today off as it’s a kingdom wide holiday. Unless you’ve worked for a grand council like the Grand Celestio Council of Wizards, you will never understand the immense joy of looking at your calendar for the upcoming week and realizing you have a day off that you forgot about. This morning I slept in three extra hours and decided to write you a letter about what a Mid-Level Mage does with an extra day off.
Since the Grand Celestio Council is not a totally barbaric institution, we are permitted two days a week to be off work, but speaking from my own experience, I need every hour of those two days to recover my magical energy depleted over the previous five, and thus I’m not able to do much once the work week has ended. In the beginning of my mage career, I sometimes tried to do bits of personal magic on the weekends and would end up wasting a whole day passed out just trying to recover my energy before having to go back to work. As young mages, you’ll quickly figure out not to over exert yourself in your free time, but before you find your balance, you’ll spend a lot of time longing for these extra days off.
Because I knew I’d have all day today to rest and regain my magical energy, yesterday, or well, two days ago, I ventured out at night in the light of the full moon, just like I used to be able to do every weekend during my school days. I travelled deep into the woods near my cottage towards my favorite faerie circle; a large ring of deep purple and blue mushrooms accompanied by the occasional rock or flower deliberately placed in line. Stepping across the ring but careful not to disturb the symmetry, I felt the tug into the other world immediately, at which point uncontrollable dance seized my body. Like clockwork, elves and fae of that other realm greeted me as I danced across air and mist, one with the trees, flowers, and beasts. Roughly thirteen hours later I awoke back in the Material Realm, lying on a bed of moss covered by a blanket of fallen leaves. I wouldn’t recommend entry into the Fae Realm to the faint of heart, but again, I’ve been crossing over for revelry since I was in school, and I’ve learned how to stay hydrated afterwards and eat the right things to stave off the inevitable elvish hangover.
If you asked a more official representative of Grand Celestio, they’d probably tell you to spend your day off in observance of the particular kingdom wide holiday being celebrated on that particular day. With today being “Good Old King Daniel’s Day” the Grand Council probably expects us all to walk down the streets handing out candy to passersby in the spirit of generosity and glee. I personally think its quite silly to give someone a day off of work and still expect them to use it to do boring traditional things, but luckily for all of us, the Council has not yet decided to start tracking how we all use our time off, and for that I do thank Good Old King Daniel.
May the moon shine favorably and without hesitation upon you,
Alexan Drytus
